It’s the details that make a difference. All three Dahlia Farmhouse rental suites have state-of-the-art, easily activated, wall-insert fire-escape ladders, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and both carbon monoxide and smoke alarms. The property has private parking spaces, uncovered. Each rental has both smart-code door locks (changed between guests) and flip-locks for nighttime security. With newly installed, super-quiet, mini-split inverter heating/air conditioning, you’ll be cool in the summer and toasty warm in the winter.

Dahlia Farmhouse is a classic stone estate that defines timeless elegance. With its imposing stone façade, intricate architectural details, original brass hardware, and timeless light fixtures, its grandeur is perfectly balanced with functionality. Boasting original, never-painted, indigenous red fir, cinnamon-hued woodwork throughout the main floor primary private suite, Dahlia Farmhouse, a luxurious sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, exudes Moscow’s history and enduring sense of community.

Historical accounts tell us that the Dahlia Farmhouse was a gathering place for events like ice cream socials, church functions, and weddings. Handwritten notes on the back of early photos indicate that the double row of white flowers in both the front and back yards were widely known as “The Bridal Paths."

The house was built by Wiley Lauder, who owned Moscow’s brickworks at the turn of the century. The first house he built and lived in on the property was a classic red-brick house, still occupied today, hidden at the end of a path lined with lilacs. With destiny eventually playing its hand, MaryJane was invited to dinner in the brick house some 45 years ago, never forgetting the meal she was served and the many tulips and flowers everywhere. It played an important role in her long-held belief and passion that preserving older structures was a worthy cause. MaryJane, the owner and caretaker of the historic four-story Oakesdale Flour Mill in Washington for 27 years, recently turned stewardship of it over to the Spokane non-profit Innovia Foundation for the goal of repurposing the space into a community center. A one-million-dollar grant, awarded to the entity spearheading the endeavor, will ensure that MaryJane’s preservation efforts, and the hundreds of 45-minute road trips she made to Oakesdale, were not in vain.

Eventually, Mr. Lauder added rock-face block to his brick-business endeavors and built the Dahlia farmhouse on the same property as the brick house as a way of showcasing the uniquely aesthetic, insulating, and enduring properties of rock-face block.

To this day, several rock-face block structures exist in Moscow, one of them owned by the City of Moscow.                                

It has been suggested by historians that the architect who designed the rock-face block house for Wiley Lauder also designed several other notable buildings in Moscow. All of them share similar design details, like projected gables and roof dormers, which are embellished with half timbering and trimmed with ornamented flared fascia boards and open-eave brackets with ornately sawn rafter tails.

Henry N. Black’s unique style of architecture includes the Methodist church on the corner of Third and Adams Streets, the Jerome J. Day house at the Northwest corner of A and Polk Streets, the “House of Seven Gables” on 325 N. Polk Street, and the impressive Morrill Hall building on the University of Idaho campus.
